Why is mental health so important?

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.

When it comes to mental health, a holistic approach considers how a person’s well-being is affected by their physical, psychological, emotional, social, and spiritual condition. A holistic approach to mental health will treat all these elements as pieces of a larger puzzle that must be individually addressed to achieve healing.

Young Adults

Poor mental health in youth and young adult hood is more than feeling blue. Youth with poor mental health may struggle with school and grades, decision making, and their health. Mental health problems in youth often go hand-in-hand with other health and behavioral risks like increased risk of drug use, experiencing violence, and higher risk sexual behavior. Because many health behaviors and habits are established in adolescence that will carry over into adult years, it is very important to help youth develop good mental health.

Adults & Elderly

It’s just as important for an older person with symptoms of depression to seek treatment as it is for someone younger. The impact of depression on health in older adults can be severe. Research has reported that depression is associated with worse health in people with conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and stroke.

Families

A diagnosis of a mental illness like in one family member affects the whole family. It might bring a strain on relationships that go above and beyond the effects it has on the individual.

Couples

A mental illness can affect a person’s relationships. There may be no relationship more affected by mental illness than the intimate relationship between partners.
